Where are the books from?

The first 4000 books came from Takoma Books in Maryland, USA.  After several weeks of inquiries and still no good source of second-hand English books, I wrote my friend Frederik who works for the National Real Estate Library and asked if he had any ideas. His local bookstore was closing its doors, and he asked Mark Elliot at Takoma Books. Mark packed me up 50 boxes of books as my starter-pack. Since then, they come from you!

Do you buy books?

Yes. We buy English books at Csengery u. 48;  and Spanish, French, German and Italian books among others at  our Suto u. 2 location. We do not buy at Lazar u. 16 or at Artosz Izvilag.

Do you have American books or English books?

For us, all that matters is that the book is in the English language (Csengery u., Lazar u.).  It is more a question if it is a book we think that our customers would be interested in.

Trade-in Policy

We buy a book on the basis of whether or not we think our customers would be interested in it. It does not matter if you bought it from us or the competition. Nor does it matter if you read it once, never, or 100 times. We look at the author, title, condition, and market. We generally give 250-300 forint (about 1 euro) for a fiction trade-in, more for non-fiction. We tend to avoid hard-covers unless it is something special.

Do you sell DVDs?

Yes we do, at Csengery u. 48.

What kinds of books do you sell?

Fiction, romance, children's books, young adult, crime and mystery,  thrillers, classics, poetry, plays, biographies/autobiographies/memoirs, Eastern European authors in translation,  art and architecture, anthropology/sociology, history, politics/current affairs, religion and philosophy, literary criticism, literary anthologies, travel guides, travel writing, sci-fi, fantasy, gender studies, gay-lesbian fiction, sport, cooking, self-help...

What is the difference between the locations?

If you want non-fiction, Csengery u. 48 has the broadest selection. Lazar u. 16 has some non-fiction, but it is mostly various fiction genres and travel guides. Suto u. 2 only has English business, reference, classics, and literary criticism - everything else is in Spanish, Italian, French, German, Dutch, Scandinavian languages, etc.

Which location has more books?

Csengery u. 48 has the most books on the shelves and many thousands more in storage. Lazar u 16. And Suto u. 2 each have another 3000 on the shelves, and Artosz Izvilag has about 1000.
